Children in the History of Art

Aurél Bernáth's characteristic way of painting started to get its final, meditative, contemplatory shape in the twenties. The motif of mother and child, and the child itself was apparent in his early, Nagybánya period, as well (Lidike with Dog, 1915). From the beginning of the thirties it became more regular, but the use of this motif became really abundant from the middle of the 1930s, after the birth of his daughter, Marili. The depiction of children has a long history in Hungarian and universal painting. Rembrandt van Rijn, the prominent personality of the Dutch Baroque painting painted his most intimate portraits of the members of his own family. He depicted his son, Titus, several times. A parallell picture with Bernáth's masterpiece is the one where Titus is thinking about his homework by a desk. While Rembrandt used warm, brownish colours, the Marili Before Blue Background is dominated by colder, bluish shade. However, what is common in the two works of art is, that both models are radiating with a certain inner light. Károly Ferenczy, the great Hungarian painter also depicted his daughter Noémi several times, one of them is possessed by the Janus Pannonius Museum, Pécs, and was painted in 1894.

The Painting and the Importance of the Colour Blue

Aurél Bernáth painted this picture in 1939 when Marili was four years old. The story of the picture is just a long moment when the little girl is admiring her birthday present by a table. The composition and the figure might easily have a certain symbolic meaning; the girl embodies Innocence, while the blue background, with hundreds of different shades of the colour has another, important meaning. The blue has always got a prominent role in Bernáth's art; here, as it embraces the little girl, can have the meaning of the love and protection of the devoted father.

The New Meaning of Composition

In the thirties Bernáth defined the direction of his art as giving new meaning of the classical composition. In his own theoretical writings he distanced himself from both Impressionism, and Abstraction. He found his roots in the traditions of the Nagybánya School, and especially in Károly Ferenczy's symbolical paintings. He meant by composition the complex artistic process when the inner vision of the artist reaches its proper place on the surface of the picture.

The painting Marili Before Blue Background has its well-deserved, timeless place in the most beautiful child - portraits both in the universal history of art, and in Hungarian painting as well.
