Study

Tibor Boromisza had an inquiring mind; his oeuvre always reflected renewing ideas and ideals. His first steps into a professional career were initially inspired by the then contemporary works of art found in Paris and Nagybánya, but after World War I he began to look for the 'big theme'. His aim was to create a characteristically Hungarian painting and for this aim he ranged the whole country. He lived at lake Balaton, in Göcsej, in Szentendre and on the Hortobágy. He always concentrated on the most relevant problems and his exhibitions always presented his newest works. Though he spent most of his time in Hungary, many of his pictures show the influence of French painting. He held that plain air was as an important step in the history of painting as steam engine or electricity in technological development; he stressed the importance of representing little, intimate things surrounding people instead of huge canvases with the pictures of battles of historical events.
The picture under discussion shows this French influence as well; this is one of the most outstanding works of Hungarian Neo-impressionism. Boromisza, being a good plain air painter, insisted on the representation of scenery and nature, though the style, the free forming of colors and lines were more important than anything else for him. His ideal was an art that springs from naturalism and ends in style. In 1906 he visited Béla Czóbel's exhibition that was presenting fauve-like pictures in Nagybánya. He is likely to have met the works of the great French artist only in the following year. A year later he painted as high a standard Post-impressionist pictures as Csaba Vilmos Perlott or Géza Bornemisza, who both were Matisse's students.
As Boromisza's Bathers can be compared to one of Matisse's early works from 1904, titled Bliss-Pomp-Silence, it may be also possible to mention two other pictures by Matisse when discussing Woman Sitting on a Bench. One is the Lady with Hat and the other is the portrait of Madame Matisse, which became well-known under the title The Green Line. Boromisza also painted his wife in the picture; the hat painted with bright colors and the green accidental lights put on the woman's face evoke Matisse's work as well. Though Boromisza's colors are less harsh, the decorative and stylized effects are very strong. He made the bench, the ground and the arbour a decorative background by applying paint staples that was so characteristic of him at that time. The figure of the woman is accentuated by fine blue contours. All these elements evoke not only the pictures of the Fauves but also that of the French secession.
