Study

Antal Ligeti is the last great representative of the late romantic landscape painting that gained its inspiration from history. In his pictures the endlessness of nature is confronted with the fragile evanescence of human history and its witnesses, buildings, castles and pieces of works made by human beings. The artistic tradition of the cult of ruins had already been more than hundred years old during those times; in his painting this tradition is conjoined with the vision of national grandness. Landscape becomes a historical picture as well, just as in his master's, Károly Markó's painting Visegrád. Nature is a worthy background of history; in front of the endless panorama even the most deplorable ruin partakes and beautifies in nature's majesty. On the other hand, the ruin, the memory of history also makes the landscape understandable.
This was the era of Hungarian painting when landscape painting tried to rid itself of the accessories of history and mythology and create a pictures of landscapes which are worthy and authentic on their own. Szinyei, Munkácsy, Paál and Mészöly were already the representatives of the new generation whose aspect was totally different from that of their predecessors. Still, Ligeti remained an important and honourable artist in their eyes. 'Uncle Ligeti', as they called him, helped the younger generation but his benignity was not the only reason of adoration. He had a huge artistic knowledge, which was also acknowledged by the members of the new generation. His landscapes are precise and liberal at the same time: exact drawing, clear conduct, craftsmanship and the ability of seeing the whole and a masterful attuning of the details are all characterise his art.(It is understandable, that some of his earlier works had been attached to his master, Markó for a long time.)
The picture above was displayed at the Műcsarnok (Art Gallery) in 1884 but its further history is unknown. Fortunately, it has survived the last 117 years in a very good condition.
