Study

Exhibited: BÁV Auction No.44. 1977. Item No. 202.

In 1840, after Ferenczy's and Barabás's death, the Hungarian Scholar Academy affiliated the painter Markó Károly, who was living in Italy. The painter had been mentioned as 'the Hungarian Claude Lorrain' and his pictures had been pieces of valuable collections by that time. In 1843 he was affiliated by the Florence Academy and later by the Academy of Venice.
Markó had a great carrier as a landscape painter in Italy but earlier he had tried hardship as well. He began to study at the academy in Vienna quite late, at the age of thirty one. Earlier, following his father's path, he had studied engineering. In Vienna he visited Peter Krafft historical painting courses. As he had serious financial problems, he changed over to landscape painting. He had to support his big family but by hard working he could make himself respectful and could find a serious patron, the banker Geymüller, who supported his longed for journey. His talent and persistence is also reflected in the fact that he was able to settle down and make a career in Rome. He stayed there until 1838 when he went to Pisa.
Procre's death represents the characteristic Campagna Romana with the sharp blocks of Tivoli in the background. The mythological scene just has been identified as one of the scenes of Cephal and Pocre's story. According to Ovid's Metamorphoses, Procre had been false to her husband, Cephal, who learned about it. Due to Diana's intercession he forgave his wife, but killed her by chance in a hunting. In the foreground of the picture one can see the desperate husband and the young wife shot through with an arrow. The ethereal figure appearing among the trees is not connected directly to the story, it alludes to a later event of Cephal's life. He falls a victim to Eos's ( or Aurora) love who carries him away from Earth. The story was also painted by Claude Lorrain three times, though he represented not the tragic hunting but Diana's mediation. Though the composition can be originated from the French painter, Marko's picture is different in its style, and in the working out of the little details he was able to surpass his master.
