Study

A 20. század első felében Scheiber Hugó volt az egyetlen olyan magyar festő, aki tudatos munkával, közel három évtizeden át újra és újra visszatérve az önarckép műfajához valóságos brandet formált saját arcvonásaiból. Nem túlzás kijelenteni: jelképpé emelte a tükörből rátekintő képet. Az egyetemes művészettörténetben is kevés olyan alkotót találunk, aki nála gyakrabban, őszintébben és kíméletlenebbül rögzítette volna ecsetjével az idő múlását, a világban betöltött helyének, társadalmi státuszának, pillanatnyi hangulatának folyamatos változását saját megjelenésén. Rembrandt és Van Gogh az evidens párhuzamok, de életművükre tekintve a különbségek, Scheiber önarcképeinek egyéni vonásai még szembe tűnőbbek. A most felbukkant mű tökéletes illusztrációja annak az önreprezentációs és önreflektív attitűdnek, amely ennek az örökké anyagi gondokkal küzdő, kicsit sem előnyös külsejű, ám megjelenését szinte kényszeres elszántsággal művészetté szublimáló festő önarcképeinek legfőbb értékét adja. Az egymást metsző kék körívekből és diffúz piros foltokból – virtuóz technikával – felépített arcot Scheiber szokatlan megoldással nem a kompozíció centrumába, hanem a képfelület alsó felében helyezte el. Ezzel részben a dekomponált, „elrontott” fotókhoz hasonlóan képének üdítő spontaneitást kölcsönzött, részben az ember és az őt körülvevő, az életét determináló, sőt nem egyszer fenyegető nagyváros konfliktusát is megjelenítette. Ezt a hatást Scheiber azzal fokozza, hogy az alacsony nézőponttal az alárendeltség érzetét váltja ki a nézőből. Ez a kifejezetten expresszionista gesztus, a megformálás technikai bravúrjával és a meglepő kolorittal a modern magyar grafika egyik rendkívül izgalmas, kiemelkedő kvalitású művévé avatja a közelmúltban előkerült, Önarckép ablak előtt című pasztellt.
