Martinszky János, az Elvont Művészek Magyarországi Csoportjának alapító tagjaként él a művészettörténet emlékezetében mint a párizsias, nonfiguratív formák festője. Most felbukkant korai alkotása 1935-ből való, amikor Mohácson kutatta a helyi folklór archaikus elemeit. A római iskolásokkal párhuzamosan fedezte fel maga számára a korai reneszánsz Madonnák klasszikus szépségét, az aranyozott mustrában rejlő modern esztétikai értékeket.
