Study

Exhibited:
Károly Ferenczy's estate, and the reprospective collection of Béni, Noémi and Valér Ferenczy. Ernst Museum, Budapest, 1918.
Charles de Tolnay, the world-famous Michelangelo researcher of Hungarian birth once compared the quality of No;mi Ferenczy's art to that of Michelangelo, Brueghel and Bosch. Tolnay met Ferenczy in the 1910; the researcher later wrote a momography about the artist.
Ferenczy was born in an artist family. First she studied dress design in Florence, Munich and Vienna, but she never became a designer. In Paris she visited the collection of the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, where the Gobelin of the Arras workshop had such elemental effect on her that she immediately applied to the world famous Manufacture des Gobelins of Paris, where she studied out the art of weaving. In 1912 she returned to Nagybánya, and a year later she made her first masterpiece, The Creation. Her early works were inspired by Gobelin from the 14th and 15th century, the windows of Chartres and the painting of the Trecento. Her next masterpiece was made in 1916; its title was Escape to Egypt. Before weaving it into a Gobelin, she made a tempera painting in proportion with the planned Gobelin, which is rather an independent work than a plan. The plans were usually made on cardboard, while the carrier of the picture under discussion is canvas. The execution of the work evoke the quattrocento, and the lush plants make the viewer remember the world of the old French flower carpets. The plants of the jungle is not usual in a picture with a Biblical theme; the tale-like mood of the picture is also intensified by the figures of the animals. The panther, the giraffe and the monkeys make the work similar to Henri Rousseau's picture.
Though Ferency chose a Biblical theme several times, tha work must have contained some historical connotations as well. At that time the world was in the middle of the war and the paintress, who regurarly visited her friends in Budapest, could really appreciate the peace of Nagybanya.
