Study

Exhibited:
Ernst Museum. February, 1931. Pict. No.48.

Two masterpieces by Aba-Novák are presented at this exhibition. While the Comedians represents the circus-series, the picture under discussion is a piece from the other defining segment of the oeuvre, the Italian landscapes.
In 1929 Aba-Novák got a scholarship to Rome. The inspiriting Italian land and the masterpieces of the country had a great influence on all the Hungarian students who managed to get there. While most of them were enchanted mainly by the monuments of the quattrocento, Aba-Novák was more interested in the early Christian Byzantine frescos and the 'primitives' of the trecento, Giotto and the others. At this time he began to paint pictures with more figures and landscapes covering broad perspectives. However, the essence of the development of his art was not so much the new theme as the changes in his technique and shaping. From fine tonality he turned to value painting; he put intensive, undivided stains of colors next to each other without any grading. In this way, the colors of the objects and elements of the picture depended not on the light cast on them but on their compositional stress. The new style was fulfilled by a new technique: Aba-Novák began to paint with tempera. His perfect technical knowledge, craftsmanship and graphical ability made it possible for him to utilise all the advantages of the new material. The surface of his pictures became light and airy, and the physical condition of the picture - as it can be experienced with paintings from the Renaissance - is much more permanent.
For Aba-Novák, the milieu of the little medieval towns in Toscana and Umbria meant much more than Rome. He went to this little study-tours together with his friend, Károly Patkó. The bays interspersed with little houses, the medieval towns creeping up the rocky slopes are usually represented from a lifted, bird's-eye perspective. Characteristic buildings, viaducts, Gothic cathedrals and fishing boats create the intimate, authentic mood of the picture. Aba-Novák's painting is more than a landscape represented with topographical exactitude; it grasps the intimate mood of the experience and expresses the creator's joy over possessing a new, but confidently applied technique.
