Study

Gróf Almásy-Teleki Éva Művészeti Intézete (The Art Institute of Countess Éva Almásy-Teleki), Auction 4. 1940. Cat. 372. (Painter Nyitray); same, Auction 5, 1941. Cat. 457;
Blitz Galéria (Gallery Blitz), Auction 5, 1986. Cat. 118.
The Collective Exhibition of Rippl-Rónai s Works. Magyar Nemzeti Galéria (Hungarian National Gallery), 1998. Cat. p.273, picture 44.

Provenance:
On the list of Rippl-Rónai's works in private ownership the third is The Portrait of Painter and Critic Nyitrai. According to this, the picture had belonged to József Nyitrai until his emigration, than the family owned it until 1941. Since then, it has had at least two owners.

József Nyitrai usually used the anagram of his surname as a signature :Yartin. The version of his name used by Rippl-Rónai - the 'y' is an allusion to Nyitrai's noble decent - was not used oficially; one can meet it only in private spheres. Nyitrai was a mouthpiece of the progressive Hungarian art in the columns of daily papers and art magazines. He is the first representative of modern Hungarian art criticism. His path of life has remained unexplored so far; even the date of his birth is uncertain. He was born in Pápa, and died in the U.S.A., where he also wrote to different newspapers during his years of emigration. We also know that he studied painting in Rome, where he wanted to realise his dreams. After working several hectic years as a journalist, he wanted to be a painter. Unfortunately, his efforts were not really fruitful. His enviable persistence resulted only in few exhibitions; some of his pictures could be seen at the exhibition of the Nemzeti Szalon (National Exhibition Room) in 1900, at the Őszi Kiállítás (Autumn Exhibition) in 1901, and at the Karácsonyi Tárlat (Christmas Exhibition) four years later. He must have made several pictures, but they could not be found. However, his critical activity is an essential part of Hungarian art at the turn of the century. This serious, steady, reliable character is represented in Rippl-Rónai's picture.
