Study

Waterbanks and Ships

Mednyánszky wrote about this topic in his diary in 1901 first. At that time he spent some time on the Italian seashore where he was captured by the sight of ships and the sea. He painted ships and shipmen in the Buccari Bay, where he "discovered a new method for the more synthetic depiction of moods" - according his own wording. Previously he painted the Danube - these paintings are in the possession of the Hungarian National Gallery now. He painted colourful watercolours about scenes in Fiume and Venice, as well.

The Netherlands and the Impressionism

The topic of seahores, riversides with colourful ships had long been popular in Mednyánszky's time. Especially the Impressionists liked it, as the mirror effects caused by the surface of water made this motif particularly exciting and challenging for them. Before the era of Impressionism there had been existing a tradition; interestingly enough not in the sunny Southern parts of Europe, but rather in the Northern country of the Netherlands. Monet was enthusiastic about the beauties of Zaandam, being not alone with his enthusiasm among his colleauges. Both Pre-Impressionism and Impressionism was related to the Dutch traditions. The greates French Romantic painter Delacroix highly respected the seventeenth century Dutch landscape painters, like Salomon van Ruysdale and Meindert Hobbema. They became extremely important for the painters of the Barbizon School as well. Corot, Troyan, Daubigny, Narcisee Diaz copied the works by Dutch masters in the Louvre. Thus Monet was not only influenced by his personal impressions, but by the art of the Barbizon School, as well.
