EXHIBITED
GEDŐ ILKA (1921-1985) FESTŐMŰVÉSZ KIÁLLÍTÁSA, Szentendre, Művésztelepi Galéra (Artists' Colony) 1985. június 28-július 28. item No. 44
ILKA GEDŐ (1921-1985) RETROPSECTIVE AND MEMORIAL EXHIBITION OF DRAWINGS AND PAINTINGS, Compass Gallery Glasgow ( 5 October -9 November) item No. 72
GEDŐ ILKA (1921-1985) KIÁLLÍTÁSA (1987. ÁPRILIS 16 - MÁJUS 17), Műcsarnok, (The Palace of Exhibitions) Budapest, Hősök tere, kiállítást rendezte és a katalógust szerkesztette Néray Katalin (The exhibition was curated and the catalgue edited by Katalin Néray.) (The painting is referred to on page 29 of the catalogue.)

János Frank writes as follows on the artist: "An art scholar trying to find the spiritual followers of Ika Gedő would, justifiably, be embarrassed. He would not be able to find any. Gedő is of her own world -- a world that consists of several hundred drawings and 150 paintings. She was a self-taught painter, although periodically she attended a number of art schools, and was enrolled in the Budapest Fine Arts Academy, an institution she quit after one semester. There was no need for her to attend classes. Moreover, in the context of her art, we cannot speak of development, or, as an artist, of station stops in her career. I witnessed the 17-year-old Ilka Gedő drawing pictures in an ad hoc drawing school. Even then, her art reflected the work of a fully developed artist. (…). Gedő made "two step" paintings in her last artistic period. She first drew a sketch of her composition, prepared a mock-up, and wrote the names of the appropriate colours in the various fields, just as a fresco painter or tapestry weaver would. She prepared a collection of sample colours in advance, and she wrote where the colours would go in the places they were ultimately applied. She never improvised on her paintings. Instead, she enlarged her original plan. In some of her pictures she painted the page torn out of her spiral-bound book as a frame, with the perforated holes on the left. After that, she copied in handwriting the texts shown on the mock-up to the painting, thus revealing her method of work to the public. This was similar to Pirandello's "play within a play." The artist achieved the effect of abstract surrealism; her protagonists were the creatures of her personal mythology. Her square or zone-shaped colour spots are restrained, yet intense. Moreover, the strength of cold and warm colours appear to be equal." ( In: Victims and Perpetrators ed. by Anita Semlyén, p. 13)
