Irodalom

Molnos Péter: Scheiber Hugó. Festészet a jazz ritmusában.

A bal oldali út perspektivikusan összefutó szélei között pár gesztussal jellemzett figurák sietnek a távolba, a jobb oldalon ívesen kanyarodó sínpárok szaladnak – szerelvényekkel keresztbevágva – a pályaudvar íves csarnoka felé. A két vonalrendszer feszültséggel teli találkozása teremti meg a gyors ecsettel felvázolt ipari táj expresszív karakterét. Az avantgárd kompozíció egyszerre hordozza a modernizmus vasúthoz fűződő jelképiségét, miközben emléket állít a Kerepesi úti felüljárón (a „Százlábú hídon”) tett sétáknak és a bécsi teherpályaudvarok körüli csatangolásoknak. A távolban feltűnő budai hegyek felett lazúros pettyek érzékeltetik a hajnali eget. A középen magasodó torony feltehetően a Rózsák terén álló Árpád-házi Szent Erzsébet templom neogótikus épületéhez tartozik.

A korai avantgárd dicsőítette a technológia új mitikus hősét, az acélmozdonyt. Ahogy Scheiber robogó lokomotívokat festett az izgatott kék vonalakkal vázolt expresszív tájképére, úgy énekelt Kassák Lajos Mesteremberek című programadó versében az épülő új világról (és benne a vonatokról):

„De mi már távol vagyunk mindentől. Ülünk a sötét bérkaszárnyák alján:
Igen!
A terekre új mithoszokat zengő acélból
s a döglött sínekre üvöltő, tüzes lokomotívokat lökünk,

1920 tavaszán a fiatal művész komolyabb anyaggal szerepelt a Nemzeti Szalon csoportos kiállításán. A következő évben jó barátjával, Kádár Bélával elutaztak a közeli császárvárosba. Vaskos mappában hozott műveire felfigyelt Max Hevesi, aki frissen alapított galériájában be is mutatta alkotásait a Mariahilfer Strassén. A tárlat anyagi és erkölcsi értelemben is nagy siker hozott Scheiber számára, és felvértezte bátorsággal, hogy legközelebb Berlinben próbáljon szerencsét a legendás Der Sturmnál. 1921 végén Patai Edit tollából hosszas portrécikk jelent meg róla a hazai zsidóság kulturális folyóiratában, a Múlt és Jövőben. A lapban szerepelt nagy motívuma, a vasúti átjáró egyik vázlata, amely a most vizsgált kép közeli rokonaihoz készült. Patai a „ciklus” eredettörténetét így mesélte el: „Ki nem járt közülünk a Keleti pályaudvar mögött, a nagy város füstös, komor előszobájában, ahol a sínek futnak jobbra és balra és szorgalmas kémények ontják a fekete kormot. […] Scheiber többször, sokszor megfestette ezeket a rideg pályaudvar-részleteket és íme a sínek ritmikus zengése elmélyül képein, az ég sötétvörös és violaárnyalatokban borul a komor föld fölé, amely lassan szintén izzóvá válik egy őszinte extázis melegében.”
