Ünnepnap

A festő hagyatékában található, fekete-fehér fénykép alapján már ismert kompozíció a vidéki élet ünnepnapjának, a falusi vásárnak állít emléket. Aba-Novák az itáliai ösztöndíjas évek után talált rá erre a témára: az epikus látásmód felé irányuló vonzalma, az élet mozgalmassága iránti olthatatlan rajjongása, páratlan technikai tudása és karakter megragadó képessége révén ezek a csoportkompozíciók adták számára az ideális művészi alapanyagot. Jól látható, ahogy szinte színházi előadás szereplőiként, a sátor elé szekéren felvonuló vándorszínészekként jeleníti meg a színes ruhájú társaság szélesen gesztikuláló, vagy éppen szerényen a háttérbe húzódó hőseit. Az utánozhatatlan figurák, a jellegzetes kéztartások, az egymásra felelő mozdulatok, s persze a népviselet fefokozott dekorativitású foltjai azt eredményezik, hogy a néző a festői formák mögé pillant, s jellemet, sorsot, történetet kanyarít a festményen feltűnő férfiak és nők köré.

A mesélő modernizmus

Bár a korlátokat alig ismerő mesélő kedve és a figurális festészethez való vonzalma tagadhatatlanul dominált, mégis Aba-Novák piktúrájában, műveinek ható erejében a tisztán festői eszközök legalább akkora súllyal esnek latba, mint az ábrázolt történet epikus jellege. Kállai Ernő, a húszas és harmincas évek egyik neves művészettörténésze, bár a modern irányzatok talán legelszántabb képviselője volt, mégis felsimerte Aba-Novák hagyományosabb szellemű festészetének értékeit. Látta ugyanis, hogy képei magával ragadó erejüket mégis a tisztán festői megoldásoknak – a kompozíció tudatos szerkesztésének, a szín- és formakezelés virtuozitásának – köszönhetik. „Aba-Novák filmszerűen mozgalmas festőiségét már a szédületes technikai lendület is ébren tartja. (…) Érdekes nézni az arcok játékát, a kezek-lábak mozgását, mert Aba-Novák mesterien, elevenül ábrázolja őket, sokszor csak egy-egy odavetett vonással, az ecsetnek egy-egy fürge fintorával, nem minden íze nélkül a humornak, karikaturisztikus tréfának. De éppen ez a fordulatos ecsetjárás, amely a temperával is olyan folyékonyan és egy-kettőre kanyarít oda egy-egy figurát, mint más festő az akvarellel – éppen a színfoltoknak ez a tarka, játszi szökdécselése az, ami minden tárgyi vonatkozáson túl annál jobban kezdi lekötni a szemünket, minél tovább nézzük a festményt.”
