Münchenből haza

„Több mint negyven éve már, a millénium évében történt, hogy hazajöttem Münchenből, ahol négy és fél évet töltöttem az akadémián. Szakadatlan munkával, tanulva, éjjel-nappal tanulva, hogy helyrehozzam, amit idehaza fiatalos könnyelműséggel mulasztottam, mint annyi más elkapatott tehetség. (...) Mondhatom, elállt szemem-szám, hogy mi, magyarok, művészi tekintetben milyen tehetségesek vagyunk s akkor ébredtem tudatára, hogy mire mehetnénk, ha úgy tudnánk vigyázni tehetségünkre, úgy tudnánk gazdálkodni vele, mint a németek. Máról holnapra érlelődött meg bennem az elhatározás, hogy: ha törik, ha szakad, de megszabadulok azoktól a hibáimtól, amelyek magyar hibák bennem. Természetesen azzal akartam használni, amire születtem, a művészetemmel” – mondta Koszta József öntudatosan 1938-ban.

Magyar és moderm

Koszta egész különleges helyet talált magának a magyaros piktúra és a modern festészet vékony közös metszetében. A századelő értette szellemi törekvéseit és értékelte kivételes koloritját. a modern színkezelés ünnepelt nagymestere, Szinyei Merse Pál például mindvégig fenntartott maga mellett egy helyet a ritkán felbukkanó kolléga számára a Japán kávéház művészasztalánál. De hasonlóan lelkesedett Koszta mélyzengésű, robusztus tömbökbe rendezett festészetéért az avantgárd művészet szigorú tekintélye, Kassák Lajos is: „azt festi, amit lát, de frappánsan, szenvedélyesen festői ez a látás, áttör az anyag burkán és képi összhangba rendszerez. Tárgyi motívumból indul ki, de amint hatalmába vette anyagát, a maga módján képi összhanggá alakítja át. (...) közvetlen természetbetartozandóságuk táplálja elementáris hatásukat.”

Meg nem állni

Koszta hangos fővárosi sikereinek köszönhetően megtehette, hogy visszavonuljon a szentesi tanyavilágba alkotni, ahogy Gauguin menekült el a párizsi civilizáció elől az egzotikus Polinéziába. Itt, az Alföldön teremtette meg a drámai ellenfényben fürdő, szaggatott, expresszív ecsetkezelésű tájak összetéveszthetetlenül „kosztás” műfaját. a most vizsgált festmény is ebbe az 1920-as években kiteljesedő műtárgycsoportba tartozik. A széles kompozíciót a kertek aljáig nyúló áradó víz szervezi: tükrében ismétlődnek meg a fák törzsei és a szénaboglyák tömege. a parasztházakon – csak kosztára jellemző módon – váltakoznak a fehér mésztől világító falak és a mély árnyékba burkolt tetők. A szélfútta, tépett lombú pusztai fák függőleges hangsúlyokkal tagolják a felhőktől örvénylő égboltot. A szem egy pillanatra se tud megállni, az ecsetmozgás nyomán megmozgatott felszín állandó izgalomba tartja a néző tekintetét.
