Egry József még egész fiatalon megjárta Párizst, 1905–1906 körül, majd 1909-ben kiállított a modern irányzatok felkarolására megalapított Művészházban. A nagy művészetszervező Rózsa Miklós egészen elragadtatott hangon írt róla A Hét hasábjain: „Ez az a fiatalember, aki huszonnégy óra alatt hódította meg Budapestet, akiről művészek, műbarátok úgy beszélnek már, mint egy új, egy magyar Millet-ről.” Ebben az évben rendezte meg a Nemzeti Szalon a nagy modern francia mestereknek szentelt kiállítását, amely Egry belgiumi utazásait inspirálta. Ezt követően látogatta meg a csodálatos, érintetlen középkori városmagjáról híres Bruges-t, ahol olyan modern magyar festők fordultak meg előtte, mint Rippl-Rónai József vagy Márffy Ödön. (Napjainkban pedig Colin Farrell és Ralph Fiennes az In Bruges [Erőszakik] című akcióvígjátékban.) Egry először 1910 augusztusában, több művész és Rózsa Miklós társaságában utazott el Belgiumba. Fantáziáját itt is kedves témája, az egyszerű emberek ragadták meg; ahogyan naplójában írta: „sokat festettem a csatornák szélén, munkások, kirakodók, hajósok érdekeltek.” Mögöttük pedig ott sorakoznak – Van Gogh-os, pettyegetően expresszív ecsettel festve – a középkori bruges-i házak.
