The artists colony in Igal - an important and unique period in Patkó's oeuvre

From the paintings that have been painted in Igal we do not know many. Out of the most significant pieces one is in the Hungarian National Gallery, one is in the Budapest Museum of History (BTM), Museum of Kiscell, and the third is the one now auctioned here.

"I am staying in Igal, in Somogy county, now. There are "short" mountains, woody hills here. It is very dusty. This is the characteristic feature of the land. I like it very much: the dust is fighting with the light, and colourts ..and colours again!" This quotation is from one of Aba -Novák's letters reporting about the life of a small, only friendship-based artist colony. The home of the doctor, Sándor Baumgartner was open for painters and writers for decades, so for Patkó, Aba -Novák and his mates as well. This picture was painted in 1928, after his arrival at home from a short study trip in Paris.

The bucolic scenes as an important theme in Patkó's oeuvre

This painting can easily be placed in the thousand-year-old tradition of depicting pastoral bucolic scenes. In the 1920s there was a tendency in Hungarian painting now called "Arcadia painting". The Hungarian National Gallery had a great exhibition about it with the title "Szőnyi and his circle". In the extensive catalogue of the exhibition we can find several variations of this topic.

Changes in the artistic expressions and techniques

The depicted scene with its many objects (people, trees, baskets) gives opportunity for the artist to use all of his mature knowledge of painting. He could express his unique composition-building, space-constructing skills outstandingly here. The composition illustrates the close relationship between his art and the modern trends of the international art beginning with Cézanne.
The rhythm of the painting is composed as it was a contemporary music piece. The basement is the circular placement of the human figures which is structured by the lines of the trees. The figures of the foreground are moving as if they were dancing.

Changes in colours

The association to music is also based on the new way of use of colours in this painting. The paint is so characteristically put onto the canvas, that close observation of the picture gives new dimensions to the apprehension of the composition.

Museum - quality piece

The painting is a museum-quality representative of the period which led from the Arcadia painting to the Roman School. It should be "protected", but as it arrived home from abroad, for administrative reasons it is not possible This fact certainly gives a good chance to enrich the image of the internationally aprreciated Hungarian painting abroad. It is important to note that in the second volume of the Modern Hungarian Painting 1919 - 1964 (published by Tamás Kieselbach) this picture will have an emphatic place.
