Study

Kádár, Béla:A papír két oldala. Interart, Bp., 1991. Bev. Goda Gábor
Gergely, Mariann: Melankolikus utazás - Kádár Béla. Mű-Terem Galéria, Budapest, 2002.

Visualization of music in the life of Béla Kádár was not only an artistic theme but a factor determing his life as well: playing chamber-music at the housing estate in the Százados street was nearly an every day programme. In virtue of musical education the son of Kádár became a conductor of orchestra and his daughter was keen on playing the piano. Consequently from the 1920s music is a frequent motif, although in different way of the painting of Kádár.

Nevertheless the theme of this pastel of the artist seems the metaphysician silence: dwelling on a pause between two musical tones.
The composition has a slight view from above representing the three male musicians as the active side and the three female characters as the audience. Concentration of attention from both sides as overlapping draws the active side near to the passive one.

The girl figures with their strict outlines are similar to a lofty puppets. This strictness is lightened only by delicate rose dresses encased in some grey tone.

These figures are covered with he methaphysician silence of the works by Girgio de Chirico. In the representation of music in the 1920s Gergely, Mariann recognizes the motifs of compositon of cubism and in the figure composition the drawings and costume design of Oskar Schlemmer. Kádár could be acquainted with these half-abstract figure-puppet motifs from the Bauhausbücher-series ( The Theatre of Bauhaus) too. In the artist's hand these hieratic figures became soft and approach the viewer with a decorative intimacy.

.
The early pair of our pastel is the painting " The Trio" from 1926. It has the same musician composition: pianist, violinist and celloist. The determining element with the largest surface is the piano itself. The level of stylized quality however is still closer to the cubism. This is reinforced by dividing of faces and use of space.
However this composition is much more vivid: glances trying to contact , motions have determined direction, and there is a definite harmony among the visual elements.

Kádár's faces modelled in a delicate way ripened by the 1930s- the faces known from the other compositions such as the face of the boy in this pictute- and his paintings are supplemented with a fresher shade of colour.
