A kubofuturista stílusmegjelölés az orosz avantgárd körében jelent meg először az első világháború idején, a francia analitikus kubizmus és az olasz futurizmus összeházasításából. Ebben a hibridben az új modern kor gépi esztétikája és robotoló dinamizmusa (futurizmus) mellett fontos szerepet kapott a látvány analizáló elemzése (kubizmus) is. A most vizsgált Scheiber Hugó-portré ezt az iskolát követi. A nyakkendős férfi mellképe zöld és piros fénycsóvák egymáson áthatoló kereszttüzében születik meg. Az elemző vonalak átszúrják a szilárd formákat, elbizonytalanítva az ábrázolt figura egyértelmű térbeliségét. Mintha az alak mozgásban lenne a sík vásznon – ahogy a futurizmus prófétája, Marinetti tanította –, forgatná a fejét, így orra mindkét irányba kirajzolódna, nyakkendője pedig jobbra-balra lendülne ki. Ez az a stilizáló modern képi nyelvezet, amelyet Scheiber a berlini Sturm körében sajátított el, ahogy a korabeli napilap, az Ujság kritikusa, Elek Artúr pontosan megállapította 1929-es írásában: „Nem sokkal utána Berlin igézetébe került Scheiber, s attól fogva kezdődik mai stílusa, amelyet szóval körülírni nem könnyű, mert kubizmus is, futurizmus is egyidőben, valójában pedig olyan törekvés, mely a valóság minden jelenségét ornamentum alakjában kívánja ábrázolni. Meg kell adni, hogy ebbe a furcsa stílusába alaposan beledolgozta magát Scheiber, s hogy olyan ötletességnek és könnyedségnek adja benne próbáit, amilyent robusztus és inkább nehézkes egyéniségéről föl nem tett volna az ember. A való élet minden jelenségét, az emberi és állati alakot, a nagyvárosi utca életét, benne házak és járművek nyüzsgését a stilizálás lehetőségének valami egészen különös megérzésével játékos ornamentummá alakítja, önmagába visszatérő vonalak szerkezetébe töri.”
