„Katonák! Gondoljatok arra, hogy ezeknek a piramisoknak a csúcsairól negyven évszázad tekint le rátok!” – lelkesítette katonáit Napóleon az egyiptomi hadjárat során. Jean-Léon Gérôme festményén nem a piramisokkal, hanem a szomszédos Nagy Szfinxszel szemközt áll lován, amelyet a homok ekkor nyakig eltemet. Oroszlánteste nem látható, csak az orr nélküli, emberi feje. A cseh származású erdélyi magyar festő, Melka Vince egyiptomi utazása után már félig kiásva jelenítette meg a 70 méteres szoboróriást. A gízai kőmonstrumot négy és fél ezer éves történelme során jó párszor betemette a sivatagi homok. Az egyiptológusok szerint az Óbirodalom idejének egyik nagy fáraója – feltehetően Hafré – építtette a nagy piramisokkal egy időben. Azt viszont senki sem tudja, mikor veszítette el az orrát. A mameluk tüzérek rajta gyakoroltak, az arabok pedig csak úgy emlegették: „a rettenet atyja”. (A közkeletű vélekedéssel ellentétben Napóleon katonái viszont nem lőttek célba az orrára.)

Mind a mai napig újabb és újabb elméletek próbálják megfejteni a misztikus szoborcsoda titkait. A vízszintes eróziós kopásnyomok miatt egyes kutatók (például dr. Robert Schoch) azt feltételezik, hogy egy olyan, az ókori egyiptomi kultúra előtt virágzó civilizáció emelte a szfinxet, amelynek idejében még gyakoriak voltak az esőzések és az áradások a kopár síkon. Mások az aránytalanul nagy testet magyarázzák azzal, hogy eredetileg oroszlánfeje volt a szobornak, amelyet egy fáraó faragtatott át a saját portréjává. Fantasztikusabb – például a népszerű Graham Hancock által vallott – elméletek szerint a Szfinx több mint tízezer éves, és a szintén ősibb gízai piramisokkal együtt képezi le az Orion csillagkép állását. Régóta suttognak arról, hogy alatta rejtett kamrák bújnak meg, akár az atlantiszi civilizáció elveszett romjai. Ezoterikus körökben pedig úgy tartják, hogy a szobor nem az egyik fáraót, hanem egy korábbi, kozmikus istenséget ábrázol, aki az ég és a föld, az emberi és állati erők kettősségét szimbolizálja. Bárhogy is értelmezzük a Nagy Szfinxet, az bizonyos, hogy a nyugati civilizáció egyik legkülönlegesebb ősi alkotása. Hasonló korai, 19. századi orientalista képet pedig minden bizonnyal csak a kevéssé ismert Melka Vince festett róla Magyarországon.
