Italian Novcecentismo and Hungarian Neoclassicism

Béla Kontuly was among the first artists who were awarded with scholarhips to the Hungarian Institute in Rome in 1929-30. He first see the works of the Italian Novecentoismo here, although he had seen reproductions of them previously. He was enchanted by the way these paintings melted classic and modern values in one style. It was the period after Avantgarde when there was forming a need to re-think Realism in modern terms.
In Hungary the Neoclassicism had had a ten-year tradition by 1930. Szőnyi and his circle started this new artistic movement in 1920 to replace and to follow the Avantgarde. The leaders of the Szőnyi circle spent their scolarship's time together with Kontuly in 1930. In Rome he was attracted by the art of Sironi, Casorati, Oppi on the one hand, and on the other he was interested in the use of the attributes, environments of the Renaissance. As a result of his Roman scholarship he created the highest quality Hungarian Realism between 1930 and 1940.

The painting - a mature example of Realism

This elegant portrait of a girl was painted in 1937. It is a very characteristic example of his sense of proportion, technical skills, and his mature sense of style. The armchair is geometrically formed. The figure is sitting before homogenuous colour surfaces. The girl is depicted photo-realistically - it is partly a result of the fact that during 1936 - 1937 he taught drawing, and consequently he was aiming at plastic forming, close to realism. Within European Realism the Italian Novecentismo has not dealt with the grotesque, the absurd. They rather showed a certain idealised reality. Kontuly has managed to put his model into a dream world, into the world of playing through the most objective depiction of her toys. In this light the girl looks like a toy doll with her golden locks, white dress in the red armchair, cut from the outer world with a drapery.

The collectors of his art

Interestingly enough, his paintings were not collected by the aristocracy and the upper classes. The modern middle class professional people were enthusiastic about his art; lawyers, doctors, architects. The models of his portraits are from this social class mainly. An important attribute to these portrait is the fashionable Art Deco furniture, showing that this layer of society does not only respect traditions, but also live in an absolutely up-to-date way.
