Study

Mucha tanítványa

Faragó Géza abból a pezsgő, sziporkázó humorral átitatott, nagyvárosi pesti miliőből nőtt ki, ahonnan Karinthy Frigyes vagy Rejtő Jenő. Bohém életrajza is regénybeillő. Tehetős családból származott, de kicsapták a gimnáziumból, mikor kiderült, hogy szabadidejét az ügetőn tölti – pedig ott is csak rajzolgatott. Tanulmányait Párizsban folytatta 1897-től, különféle iskolákat látogatott, köztük a neves Arts Décoratifs-t. A párizsi szecessziós plakáttervezés legnagyobb zsenijének, a cseh Alfons Muchának műhelyében dolgozott évekig, majd saját lábára állt, de betegsége miatt haza kellett költöznie Budapestre. Friss szellemű, szecessziós rajzkultúrájú, humoros grafikái valóságos forradalmat váltottak ki a hazai plakátművészetben, miközben festőként is szerepelt a főváros kiállítótermeiben.

Szecessziós fríz

Faragó keze alatt a magyar szecessziós képzőművészet legszebb gyöngyszemei születtek meg, társítva egymással a jól jellemzett figurákat, a virtuóz sziluettrajzot és a decens mintázatot. Ezt láthatjuk most vizsgált alkotásán is: a glaszékesztyűben szivarozó, szmokingos uraságot kedvese támogatja leeresztett lornyonnal, miközben egy cigarettázó idős hölgy hajol oda hozzájuk. Mögöttük libériás pincér kínálja széles mosollyal az egzotikus gyümölcsöket, az elfogódott fiatal szépség pedig félszegen tördeli kezeit. A falon szecessziós díszítés, virágtartó konzol és egy tájkép. A festmény párdarabja Vörösváry Ákos gyűjteményében látható, hasonló színpadszerű háttérrel és a korszak jellegzetes úri figuráit karikírozó alakokkal. Faragó a karikatúrák nagymestere volt (plakátjairól tudhatjuk), de festményein a maró vitriolt szellemes portretírozásra cseréli. Mintha egy Molnár Ferenc-darabot látnánk udvarló katonatisztekkel, öreg tanácsosokkal, unatkozó szépasszonyokkal és dzsentri leánykákkal. De a korabeli vicclapokból és vígjátékokból ismert pesti karaktereket kiérlelt módon, az autonóm festészet nyelvén adja elő, a figurák láncolatával és a minták tobzódásával megidézve a legszebb art nouveau frízek eleganciáját. Faragó – mint a magyar szecessziós plakát mestere – már ismert a nemzetközi színtéren is, de önálló festészeti életműve még felfedezésre vár.
