Study

Gerard de Lairesse first studied from his father, Renier Lairesse, then from Bertholet Flémalle in his home-town, Liége. He settled down in Amsterdam in 1667 where he had a great influence as a painter and as a person of theory as well.

In this painting we can see the allegory of the Public Welfare "Felicitas Publica". The main character is leaning on the young woman symbolising fertility and richness, and also on the other young woman symbolising Hope. Fertility, Public Welfare, Richness and Hope is the basis of Fame, symbolised by the genius with wings. The motif of the Peace is also emphasised; Mars the God of Wars is tied up in the left corner. This work of art must be from around 1675-80.
