Lotz Károly a nemzeti historizmus legsokoldalúbb és legtermékenyebb nagymestereként szerepel a magyar művészettörténet lapjain. Szorgos műhelyéből mitológiai és történeti freskók sokasága került ki, díszítve a pesti bérpaloták és középületek legszebbjeit. De megihlették a magyaros tájképi motívumok is, az itatásra váró ménesek és a végtelen róna. Most vizsgált festményén ott találjuk a 19. századi tájfestők fontos toposzait, a megejtő szépségű napfelkelte narancsos pírját és a romantikus nemzettudat – Petőfi által megszentelt – vizuális kulcsmomentumait, a végtelenbe futó pusztát, valamint a széles horizontot megtörő magyaros gémeskutat. A nagyszabású palotadekorációiról ismer Lotz itt rebbenően érzéki, pasztózus ecsetkezelésével bűvöli el a nézőt. Pár könnyed vonással rajzolja ki a táji kompozíciót: a víztükröt, az üres vályút vagy a kútágast. És nem utolsósorban a rónaság tengerként hullámzó síkját, amely fölött a felkelő nap által bevilágított zivatarfelhők gomolyognak. Életrajzírója, Ybl Ervin jegyezte meg egy helyen, hogy akadémikus szemléletét mennyire felülírta a jellegzetes hazai látványvilág: „a romantikus magyar témák, a magyar Alföld motívumai eltérítették a klasszikus szemlélettől. Igaz ugyan, hogy a magyar népéletből merített képein is nagy hasznát vette a Rahl-iskolában magába szívott akadémikus tanulmányoknak, alföldi táj- és lovasképei mégis inkább a naturalizmus felé terelték festői szemléletét.” Máshol pedig azt fejtegette Ybl, hogy Lotzot ugyanúgy ragadták magukkal a hazai táji témák, mint Petőfit, aki a „fenyvesekkel vadregényes” magas hegyek helyett az „alföld tengersík” vidékéért lelkesedett: „ő a természetet a magyar alföld rónáin tanulta meg ismerni, nem pedig hegyes völgyes erdőrengetegekben, mint német társa”.
