Színköltészetté átírt motívum

Szőnyi István érzékeny színfoltokból szőtt nagyszabású képe a festő harmincas évekbeli érett korszakának főműve. Nem véletlenül került fel a közelmúltban megjelent monográfia egyik kötetének címoldalára. Meleg sárgákból, őszies koloritból komponált színszimfónia, amely a posztimpresszionisták (Edouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard stb.) látványt átlényegítő költői esztétikájából táplálkozik. Elméleti írásában Szőnyi így magyarázta, miként kell átírni egy természeti motívumot autonóm képzőművészeti alkotássá: „Az biztos, hogy a természeti jelenségek optikai képe minden normális szemű ember recehártyáján egyenlően tükröződik. Ezért fogadunk el egy jól megcsinált, éles, tiszta fényképet egyként objektív, tárgyias ábrázolásnak. A művész abból az optikai összbenyomásból, amit a természet visszatükröződése ad, azt választja ki, aminek a színe, formája, elhelyezése érdekli és gyönyörködteti. Ez érzéseket és gondolatokat ébreszt benne, melyek egész valóját hatalmukba kerítik, nem tud kitérni előlük, s arra ösztökélik, hogy megpróbálja őket a meglátott időbeli és így múló jelenségen keresztül örökéletűvé tenni.” Szőnyi a most elemzett festményén egy aranyló napfényben fürdő zebegényi kertet tett örök életűvé.

Szőnyi a Képzőművészeti Főiskolán fiatal mesterként – először 1943-ban megfogalmazott – elméleti szövegében alaposan leírta azt a folyamatot, ahogy a valóságból kiinduló festő művészi szimbólummá alakítja a természeti motívumot: „A fantázia is csak a természetből ismert elemeket, fogalmakat, jelenségeket csoportosítja át – esetleg meglepően újszerű módon –, de a semmiből a fantázia sem tud teremteni. Hogyan tudhatna a festő, akinek éltető eleme az őt környező világ optikai képe. Ebből alkothat, ezt alakíthatja, ízlése, adottsága, tehetsége szerint dolgozhatja fel. Ha van tehetsége, ha éles a megfigyelőképessége, jó a szeme, finom és érzékeny a színérzéke, akkor a látható világból olyat tud kiragadni és megjeleníteni, amit jóformán mindenki lát, de csak ő veszi észre s csak ő tudja belőle megteremteni azt az egyéni művet, mely a nézőt magával ragadja, gyönyörködteti, élményt nyújt neki.”

Szőnyi színköltészetének különös erejére már első monográfusa, Fenyő Iván is felfigyelt 1934-ben. Fenyő így írt tájképeinek formákat felülíró koloritjáról: „A festői megjelenítés – elsősorban a fény intenzív ábrázolásának fejlődése folyamán – mindig tágabb teret nyújt a fényekben kifejezett atmoszférikus ábrázolásnak. A fény, a levegő tompítja az anyagi érzékeltetés skálájának terjedelmét, a tárgyakat áttetszővé teszi és rajzukat a leglényegesebbre korlátozza. […] Témája a napfény szétömlése, általában a szabad természetben megfigyelhető színjelenségek festői kihasználása. Újabb problémája az, hogy fényt reflektálva mennyiben változhatnak a formák és hogy az egymásra fényt vető tárgyak milyen színekkel és hogyan ábrázolhatók.”

Zebegényi magány

Végvári Lajos, az 1962-es Szőnyi-monográfia szerzője szerint a városias neveltetésű Szőnyi tudatos művészi programként választotta a vidéki életet: „Azt vallotta, hogy a művész sorsa a magány, s álláspontját meg is valósította: falura költözött, s haláláig – közel negyven évig élt ott – két órányi távolságra a fővárostól és barátaitól. Mert a faluban egyetlen barátja sem volt, meg sem kísérelte, hogy a múlt század nagy remetéihez – Tolsztojhoz, Gauguinhez – hasonlóan azonosulni próbáljon a néppel. Mindvégig sokkal inkább élt benne a magány tudata.” Szőnyi festészetre koncentráló vidéki életvitelét az általa felfedezett Zebegényben valósította meg.

A festőt egy szerencsés véletlen vezette el a Dunakanyar különleges szépségű tájára. 1924-ben elvette feleségül Bartóky Melindát, aki ismert fiatal írónak számított már ekkoriban, és földbirtokos férjét hagyta ott művész szerelméért. Közös életüket a Bartóky család zebegényi nyaralójában kezdték el, egy Kós Károly tanácsára átalakított kis parasztházban. Minden megtalálható volt itt, amire a természet titkait fürkészni szándékozó fiatal festőnek szüksége lehetett: Zebegényben végre megtalálta saját Árkádiáját és a magyar festészet új Nagybányáját. Ahogy Perneczky Géza írta Szőnyi 1963-as emlékkiállítása kapcsán: „A tisztuláshoz és a harmónia megtalálásához a vidék, Zebegény segítette. Itt találta meg művészetének fő élményét: a Duna-kanyar táji szépségét, és az ott dolgozó emberek munkáséletét. […] A monumentális téma adva volt, és hozzá a nagy lélegzetű humánus tartalom: a tájjal egybekapcsolódott emberi élet szépsége.”

Németh Lajos művészettörténész pontos megfogalmazása szerint Szőnyi a zebegényi világot írta át festői lírává: „Témaköre és műveinek szelleme az évek során teljesen Zebegényhez kötődött. […] A motívumokat sohasem értelmezte zsánerszerűen, az állapotszerű létet jelenítette, képein a lágyan összemosódó, puha színek lírai érzelmeket sugalltak. Az izmusok intellektuális analitikusságát tudatosan elvetette, úgy érezte, a magyar karakter lényegéhez tartozik, hogy nem vonzódik a spekulatív dolgokhoz. Ezért nem érdekelte sem a kompozíció, sem a térábrázolás modern lehetőségeinek a racionális elemzése, hanem csak a szemében bízott, a látvány szépségét meglátó, a fényértékek között eligazodó érzékeny szemben és eredendő humanizmusában.” A most vizsgált nagyszabású kompozíció ennek a jellegzetesen szőnyis, érzékeny festői szemnek és humánus érzelemvilágnak az egyik legteljesebb megtestesülése.

Magánmúzeum a Párizsi Udvarban

Az alkotás a kiváló fogorvos, fogszabályozó-specialista dr. Kunvári Bella gyűjteményébe tartozott Czóbel-, Barcsay- és Vajda Lajos-művek társaságában. A doktornő jelentékeny műgyűjteményének jókora részét – több mint háromszáz képet és szobrot – 1968-ban a pécsi Janus Pannonius Múzeumnak adományozta. Szőnyi közeli barátságot ápolt Kunvári doktornővel, nemcsak portrét festett róla, de a gyűjtő idézte őt egy vele készült interjúban is: „Szőnyi István mondta, hogy a műgyűjtéshez eredendő intuíció kell, belső adottság, a műértő pedig az alkotó módosult változata, s épp olyan kevés van belőle, mint jó festőből. Csak azt gyűjtöttem, ami kellett nekem, belül kellett, s arról meg sem változott soha a véleményem.” Kunvári gyűjtői szenvedélyét vasútmérnök édesapjától örökölte, de páratlan kollekcióját közel fél évszázad állhatatos munkájával állította össze. Az első ihletet egy 1914-es párizsi utazás adta, majd – modern szellemiségű családjának köszönhetően – saját praxisából teremtette meg egzisztenciáját Budapesten. Lipcsében tanult, Amerikában tapasztalatokat gyűjtött, fiatalon eljárt a Galilei Körbe, és romantikus viszonyba bonyolódott József Attilával. Emancipált nőként részt vett a nőmozgalmi aktivizmusban (elnökölt a Dolgozó Nők Clubjában), de politikai szerepet is vállalt.

„A húszas években – mesélte – már mint kész ember fordulhattam legkedvesebb szenvedélyem felé. Lassan úgy nőtt körém a gyűjtemény, mint csiga köré a háza. Eléggé tájékozott voltam a képzőművészetben, úgy gondolom, érzékem is volt hozzá – nem jelentett túl sok töprengést, kiket válasszak. Büszke vagyok arra, hogy még életében – tehát névtelenségében – vásároltam Vajda Lajostól, Barcsaytól, Bartha Ernőtől, Hantai Simontól – mind felfedezések voltak számomra, saját felfedezéseim, amiket igazolt az idő.” A Párizsi Udvar harmadik emeletén található lakása – egy valóságos „magánmúzeum” – ritka nagypolgári miliőt sugárzott a hatvanas években: az antik bútorok, távol-keleti faragványok, afrikai díszek és népies kincsek között Czóbel-, Derkovits-, Mednyánszky- és Ferenczy-művek társaságában ott függött Szőnyi most vizsgált érett remeke. A különleges műkincs nem került múzeumi tulajdonba, Kunváritól egy másik neves műgyűjtőhöz, Rév Miklóshoz vándorolt.
