Géza Vörös and the École de Paris

The Turck Collection is extremely rich in Hungarian works which used to belong to the mainstream of their age, that is, mainly to to French line of painting in the first decades of the twentieth century. While the excellent landscape of László Paál refers back to the Barbizon School, to the art of Courbet, Millet, Diaz, the art of Géza Vörös illustrates the end of the process that had to be broken because the World War II. The mature works of János Vaszary and Vörös' paintings in the twenties and thirties represent the closest links to the art of Paris at that time. The collector must have an excellent taste to choose the most important works from both of the oeuvres in his collection. These main works by Géza Vörös are excellent examples for the par excellence artistry of the École de Paris. From 1927 on Géza Vörös had visited Paris several times. He was enthusiastic about the busy art life of the city, the exhibitons opening each day, the society life, the atmosphere of the cafés. He was influenced mainly by Matisse, Foujita, Kisling and Van Dongen; he knew all of them personally.

The Still -Life: Tribute to Matisse

In Hungary he exhibited his works at the shows of the KUT and later at the UME. He was successful with his still-lifes and with his interiors with one or two figures.
The Still-Life with a Violin has an absolutely abstracted background. This background serves as the decorative rhythm of the composition. The composition itself is precisely logic. The harsh colours of the late Matisse and the sophisticated geometry of Picasso's composition are present equally. The influence of these two giants is admitted by the Matisse book on this still -life and the Picasso book on the other (Lot. No. 85.). On the one hand the two paintings are tribute to them, and he also expresses his own creed on the other hand. The space is not important, while he increases the expressivity of colour and line to the extremes. He is creating a visual harmony for itself which does not want to teach or educate. The carefree atmosphere of his paintings reminds us of Matisse's credo: "My aim is the art of balance and clarity…"
