Study

Faragó Géza regény beillő századfordulós bohém volt. Tehetős családból származott, de kicsapták a gimnáziumból, amikor kiderült, hogy szabadidejét az ügetőn tölti (rajzolgatással). 1897-ben tanulmányait Párizsban folytatta, különféle iskolákat látogatott, köztük a neves Arts Décoratifst. A párizsi szecessziós plakáttervezés legnagyobb zsenije, a cseh Alfons Mucha műhelyében dolgozott évekig, majd a saját lábára állt, és hazaköltözött Budapestre. Friss szellemű, szecessziós rajzkultúrájú, humoros grafikái valóságos forradalmat robbantottak ki a hazai plakátművészetben, miközben festőként is szerepelt a főváros kiállítótermeiben. A magyar szecessziós képzőművészet legjavát képviselő olaj- és pasztellképein a jól jellemzett figurákhoz virtuóz sziluettrajz és a Muchától örökölt „ostorcsapásszerű” vonalkultúra társul.

A most vizsgált kép Faragó legerősebb, szecessziós korszakának gyöngyszeme, amikor még a Párizsban, Mucha mellett megtanult – síkszerű, graciőz vonalrajzra és a foltok dekoratív ritmusára alapuló – stílusát nem cserélte fel a hagyományos tónusfestésre. Poétikus hangulatú, a természet megújulását, a világ újjászületését szimbolizáló képén az előtérbe állított növényi ornamens mögött klasszikus szépségű, pártás fejdíszű nőalak áll. A fa ágainak sűrű vonalhálója dekoratív sziluettként tűnik fel, de nem csupán remek formai ötletként hat: az eltakarva is láttató motívum a néző számára a rejtőzködő vojőr szerepét, a meglesés, a titok leleplezésének archetipikus élményét is felkínálja. A kép alsó harmadában feltűnő virágszirmok, a nőalak ruhájának gazdag vonalhálója és a háttérbeli táj zöld színe éles ellentétben áll a faágornamens arabeszkjével, szimbolikus, meseszerű hangulatot kölcsönözve az ábrázolásnak. Illik rá Faragó mesterének, Muchának a tanítása: „A művészet csak azért létezik, hogy lelki üzeneteket adjon át.”
