Moholy-Nagy, László Bácsborsód, 1895 - 1946, Chicago
|
First studied law in Budapest, and then began drawing as he was convalescing from wounds sustained in the World War, joining the circle of MA very soon after that. Emigrated to Vienna in 1919, and from there to Berlin. This is where the opportunity for a first solo exhibition at the Sturm Gallery presented itself, where he met the representatives of constructivism; El Liszickij, Raoul Hausmann and Hanna Höch counted among his friends. He edited the New Artists Book in German and Hungarian, together with Kassák in 1922. He became the artistic director of the metal workshop of the Bauhaus on the invitation of Water Gropius in 1923. Next to this work he prepared portfolios of graphic art and designed typography, also editing the series of volumes published by the Bauhaus. He conducted his experiments with light upon the mediums of photo, film and three dimensional objects. He showed his work together with the Abstraction-Création group in Paris in 1932 through 1934. He lived in London from 1935, finally to settle in the United States of America. He taught at the Chicago Bauhaus, and later established his own school. |
