Study

Exhibited:
Winter Exhibition of the National Salon, 1902/3. Cat. No. 193.

Gulácsy began to draw at an early age. With his father's support he wanted to be an artist from his childhood and went to an art school where Ede Balló and Antal Loránffy taught him to draw. Later his professors expelled him and he went to paint to Bereg, where his family lived. His picture Hilly Country was offered to and accepted by the Museum of Fine Arts. The exhibition of the painting served as a little satisfaction for the refusal he had got from the academic masters. He was keen on Böcklin's and Segantini's art; and thus it is not surprising that he chose Ödön Kacziány as his master. The beloved and respected master's pictures, that evoked the mythical landscapes of the Italian Middle Age, had a great effect on young Gulácsy who was an admirer of Italy and its culture. In 1902 the painter went to Rome and stayed there until the spring of 1903. We have discovered only one picture from these months up until now, the oil painting The Artist's Devotion. Other pictures that were made and exhibited in Italy have not been found so far.
The picture under discussion is Gulácsy's first self-portrait. The figure in the picture is wearing the noble costume of the 15th century; one may notice that he is looking out from the picture, this is very characteristic in the tradition of self-portraits and meant to demonstrate the artist's enthusiasm . There are three hills behind him: the first is his personal space, the second, at eye level, is dominated by the dark long figure of Death which is so familiar of Kaczinyi's pictures. The horizon with its cypresses and its white block is the space of final calm and everlasting life. The compositional characteristics of the picture - the body put to the right side of the picture, the seeming vacancy of the left side and also the low-keyed coloring of the picture - foreshadowed his beautiful watercolor Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta which was made in the following year. It is also akin to another watercolor, Omnia vanita. Reading Gulácsy's letters one can see how much the artist was interested in the thoughts of mortality and everlasting life at that time.
